Short-time work compensation to be extended to 18 months

In Switzerland, short-time working compensation is to be extended from the current twelve months to 18 months. The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) intends to propose this to the Federal Council in the summer.
This is provided that the economic situation remains unchanged, as the EAER announced on Thursday. Companies facing economic problems would be given more time to adapt to the market situation thanks to the longer period of entitlement. However, there is only an entitlement to short-time working compensation if all requirements are met. This will be examined on a case-by-case basis, the EAER added.
As a rule, companies can claim short-time working compensation for a maximum of twelve months within a two-year period. The law allows the Federal Council to increase the maximum period of entitlement by six months. One of the conditions is that the federal government's labor market forecasts do not indicate any recovery for the following twelve months. According to an initial review by the EAER, the conditions for extending the maximum period of entitlement are currently met.
Due to the sharp rise in energy prices at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, energy-intensive industries in particular had to resort to short-time working compensation. In the meantime, energy prices have fallen again. However, the economic situation in various sectors remains difficult, the EAER continued.
