2449 asylum applications were submitted in Switzerland in February. Although this was 11.5 percent fewer than in the previous month, an increase of 768 applications was registered compared to February 2023.
The most important country of origin was Afghanistan with 910 applications, 117 more than in January, according to the monthly statistics published by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Thursday.
Around 500 of the 910 asylum applications from Afghan asylum seekers were related to the change in practice. Following a recommendation by the European Asylum Agency, the SEM had decided to grant asylum to women from Afghanistan as a rule. In February, 301 Afghan nationals actually entered Switzerland to apply for asylum, 104 fewer than in the previous month.
