Several dozen people evacuated due to fire in Elgg ZH

Several buildings caught fire in the village center of Elgg ZH on Saturday night. According to the police, several dozen people had to be evacuated.

No one was injured, as a spokesman for the Zurich cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency early on Saturday morning.

The residents of the buildings affected by the fire and the surrounding properties were also evacuated due to the heavy smoke. Accommodation is being organized for them.

"The property damage is enormous," said the spokesperson. Buildings not directly affected by the fire and parked vehicles were also damaged. "The extinguishing work is likely to continue for several hours", said the spokesperson. However, the fire is under control. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The emergency call about the fire was received at 00:20. The house in the village center was fully engulfed in flames when the emergency services arrived. According to the police, the fire spread to other buildings.

The Alertswiss warning service issued a warning of heavy smoke shortly after 01:00. Residents were also asked to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation and air conditioning systems early on Saturday morning.
