Following the failure of a UN Security Council resolution on the war in the Middle East, Switzerland has once again called on Islamist Hamas and Israel to agree to a ceasefire. An immediate humanitarian ceasefire is necessary, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.

According to the statement, such a measure should facilitate the release of the hostages and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to and within the Gaza Strip. The parties must respect international humanitarian law and protect the civilian population.

A resolution proposed by the USA for a ceasefire in the Middle East failed in the UN Security Council on Friday due to a double veto by Russia and China. Switzerland had supported the resolution.

In a statement issued by Switzerland after the vote, it said that the resolution would have been, among other things, a signal to the parties to the conflict to work towards a lasting ceasefire, almost six months "after the acts of terrorism by Hamas", which Switzerland condemned. Furthermore, the resolution would have underlined the central importance of a two-state solution, which in Switzerland's view is "the only basis for peace and security" in the region.
