Switzerland is a nation of emigrants. This is the conclusion drawn by the statistics on the Swiss abroad. The Swiss community abroad grew by 1.7 percent in 2023. Almost two thirds of them lived in Europe.

And over a quarter lived in France, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. On December 31, 2023, 813,400 Swiss nationals were registered with a representation abroad. In 2022, the Swiss population abroad had grown by 1.5 percent.

At 3.1%, the emigrant community grew the most in Asia, followed by Europe (1.9%), Oceania (1.2%), North America (1%) and Latin America and the Caribbean (0.4%). Only in Africa did it fall by 0.2 percent.

The FSO attributes this development only partly to migration movements. The difference between births and deaths as well as naturalizations also contributed. Three quarters of Swiss nationals abroad have multiple citizenships.
