Heavy rainfall has also led to a road closure in the canton of Graubünden: the road into the Calanca Valley will be closed from Sunday evening until probably midday on Monday for safety reasons, as the Graubünden authorities announced on Sunday.

The closure to all traffic is due to heavy rainfall in combination with heavy snowmelt, it said. Specifically, the road between Bivio Castaneda and the Buseno junction will be closed from 21:00 to 12:00.

This means that individual villages with a total of several hundred inhabitants are temporarily cut off.

The road into the Calanca Valley in the Misox, which is at risk of falling rocks, had been repeatedly closed in the past. In February, the Graubünden Civil Engineering Office announced a series of measures to secure the road. In April, for example, an unstable rock formation near Buseno was to be removed. In the long term, galleries and tunnels may be built.
