Last week's attacks by FC Zurich fans on private security staff and the Geneva cantonal police have consequences: The home sector at the Letzigrund will remain closed for FC Zurich's next home match against FC St. Gallen.

Zurich's head of security Karin Rykart (Greens) decided to close the home sector with the standing areas of the south curve at the next home game on April 21.

This was announced by the Conference of Cantonal Justice and Police Directors (KKJPD) on Friday. The working group of the licensing authorities had clearly classified the attacks by the FCZ fans as serious. Such behavior will not be tolerated.

Last Saturday, several hundred FCZ fans attacked the private security service at the Stade de Genève as well as police officers. The Zurich fans threw metal rods, seats, firecrackers, pyrotechnics and gravel stones at the police.

FCZ blames security company

The FCZ emphasized in a statement that it naturally condemns the violent behaviour of some of its fans in the strongest possible terms. However, it also sees the security forces as being partly to blame. The employees of the private security company in the stadium were "aggressive, uncooperative and unprofessional".

This is no justification for the violent incidents, but must be taken into account when dealing with them, writes the FCZ. "Publicly effective collective punishment", as FCZ calls the sector ban, is now the wrong approach. The renewed closure of the home sector is incomprehensible and disproportionate. The FCZ therefore intends to challenge the order.

Back in January, the standing sections D24 to D27 in the south curve of the Letzigrund were closed for the match between FCZ and Lausanne-Sport. The reason for this was rioting after an FCZ match against FCB. Around 100 FCZ fans had attacked police officers at Altstetten station with smoke petards, fireworks and stones.
