The number of attacks on ATMs in Switzerland has almost halved within a year. According to figures from the Federal Police, there were 32 ATM attacks in 2023, as reported on the X portal on Friday. There were 56 in the previous year.

Nevertheless, we should not be lulled into a false sense of security, a spokeswoman for the Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) told Keystone-SDA. Many attacks on ATMs involve explosives. Ultimately, preventing ATM attacks is also about protecting human life.

Of the 32 attacks on ATMs in 2023, 22 were carried out with explosives. However, according to Fedpol, three of these attacks did not result in a detonation.

The authorities attribute the sharp decline in ATM robberies to security measures such as bars, video cameras, the use of dyes and the relocation of vulnerable ATMs. In addition, several groups of perpetrators have been caught, according to Fedpol.
