After an increase last year, the audience has remained loyal to the Visions du Réel documentary film festival in Nyon VD. The organizers were pleased because they also achieved their goal of bringing more young viewers into the cinemas. There were also screenings for schools.
These were attended by over 3,000 schoolchildren, as the film festival announced at the end on Sunday. That was 15 percent more than the previous year. Accessibility and inclusion were achieved through the online offer, which extended beyond the festival for the first time and allows audiences to watch over 50 films from the 2024 edition from anywhere until April 28.
New York filmmaker John Wilson and his French colleague Alice Diop held master classes on their artistic approaches. According to the organizers, they each had a full house, with mainly younger people taking part.
For the third time in a row, Visions du Réel's top award went to a Swiss film. Nicole Vögele received the Grand Prix 2024 in the festival's international feature film competition for her film "The Landscape and the Fury".
The documentary is dedicated to the Bosnian-Croatian border region, where migrant families, deminers and locals meet. The film deals with questions about home and violence, but also coincidence.
This year's edition from April 12 to 21 was the 55th edition of the documentary film festival in Nyon. The 56th edition will take place from April 4 to 13, 2025.
