The mountain railroads close the winter season on a positive note. Compared to the previous year, the number of guests increased by 3 percent by the end of April. In a five-year comparison, there was even an increase of 5 percent. The reason for this was the early and late snow.

The early snowfall in November and the weather conditions over Christmas, New Year and in January laid a strong foundation, as the Swiss Cableways Association announced on Wednesday. The warmth in February and March affected the lower-lying ski resorts. Snow at the end of March and in April brought new momentum to the higher areas.

According to Cableways Switzerland, there were major regional differences due to the weather conditions. The Fribourg Alps with their ski resorts at medium altitudes recorded a 31% drop in guests, while the Jura Arc saw a 26% drop. Eastern Switzerland recorded the greatest growth at 9 percent. The season in Ticino was saved by the snow in March, meaning that the decline was only 1 percent.

In terms of company size, the larger mountain railroads with a turnover of over CHF 20 million grew more strongly than smaller ones. Their number of guests rose by 5 percent, while companies with a turnover of less than 2 million fell by 35 percent. However, the larger companies are also higher, as the association explained.
