The St. Gallen cantonal police have built a performance test bench for tuned vehicles. According to a press release, this makes it the first Swiss police force with its own facility for the official testing of performance upgrades on cars.
The police are increasingly detecting technical modifications to cars during vehicle checks or after traffic accidents, the St. Gallen cantonal police wrote in a press release on Monday. However, due to a lack of verifiability, such widespread modifications to increase performance have often gone undetected.
At the end of May, the police will put a performance test bench built at a cost of 170,000 Swiss francs into operation in the east of the city of St. Gallen, according to the press release. According to the current state of the art, combustion and electric vehicles can also be tested for various tricks to increase performance.
Confiscation for examination
If future technical traffic checks reveal evidence of an increase in performance, drivers must expect their vehicle to be seized for a performance check. Depending on the result of the measurement, a decision will then be made on further measures or the initiation of criminal prosecution.
Changes to the performance of vehicles must be reported and tested. In the case of a power increase of 20 percent or more, a certificate from the manufacturer is also required to confirm that the vehicle is still safe to operate. Vehicle components such as the chassis or brakes are not necessarily designed for a higher drive performance.
