At the first media conference following the death of Vice-Chancellor and Federal Council Speaker André Simonazzi, Federal Chancellor Viktor Rossi paid tribute to the deceased as "the great absentee in the room". He said he was still deeply saddened by the Vice-Chancellor's death.
Simonazzi had chaired the Federal Council's media conferences for 15 years, Rossi told the media in Bern on Wednesday. Simonazzi had worked in the interests of the institutions and the Federal Council as a body and had consolidated cooperation. He had established clear processes in the Federal Chancellery and left his successor with solid foundations.
Simonazzi never gave curt answers to media representatives out of disdain, Rossi continued. Rather, the deceased had acted out of a sense of duty and wanted to enable the Federal Council to make unbiased decisions. Sometimes silence was also appropriate.
Vice-Chancellor André Simonazzi's successor will be appointed by the Federal Council at the request of Chancellor Rossi. The Vice-Chancellor holds a key position and is a person of trust of the Federal Council.
