Stadler has received another order from Austria. The train manufacturer from eastern Switzerland is supplying 18 new fire-fighting and rescue multiple units to ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, as announced on Friday.

They are to be stationed at various tunnel portals, where they can be deployed by the local fire departments in the event of incidents. Stadler goes on to say that the electric hybrid drive of the new trains can be powered by overhead lines as well as by powerful traction batteries or diesel generators. This makes a "completely new extinguishing and rescue concept" possible.

Among other things, the train can fight its way through a smoky tunnel to the source of the fire, fight fires, rescue people from damaged trains or tow such trains and bring everything it is carrying out of the danger zone to safety. In an emergency, more than 300 people could be evacuated in the three wagons, which can be accessed from front to back.

The first of the new special vehicles was presented to the public for the first time in St. Pölten on Friday, according to the press release. The trains will be developed and produced at the Swiss sites in Bussnang and St. Margrethen. Assembly work began in 2022, functional tests are currently being carried out and the approval process will then begin this year, according to a communiqué published by ÖBB on the same day.

According to the report, the Austrian rail operator is paying 230 million euros for the delivery of the 18 vehicles. The first so-called "service jet" will be used for the first time for the commissioning of the Koralm Railway with the core section of the 33-kilometer Koralm Tunnel. It will then be successively deployed throughout the entire ÖBB-Infrastruktur network.
