The workforce at the Vetropack plant in St-Prex (VD), which has been on strike for three days, invited the public to a day of solidarity on Sunday. According to the trade union Unia, several hundred people attended.
The strikers and the local population met at the market in St-Prex. "They were very well received and felt supported in their struggle," Nicole Vassalli from Unia told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Pierre-Yves Maillard, President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), and Vania Alleva, President of Unia Switzerland, who both expressed their support for the strike, took part in the official part of the event, which the organizers said was attended by around 300 people.
Strike since Friday
Since the announcement of the closure of the glass factory in mid-May, the employees, who are supported by the Unia and Syna trade unions, have been demanding negotiations on the social plan. The unions are demanding that no redundancies be made until the social plan has been signed. And industrial jobs must be retained in Saint-Prex.
As the employees felt that the management was not responding to these three demands, they decided to walk off the job on Friday.
