Retour au fil d'actualité

Paintings that disappeared from the Kunsthaus Zurich have reappeared after more than a year. As the Kunsthaus announced on Sunday, the two paintings are intact.

The two paintings will be exhibited again as soon as possible, the Kunsthaus added.

The cantonal police, who were immediately called in, began an investigation together with the Zurich-Sihl public prosecutor's office. The Kunsthaus did not provide any further details, such as where and how the paintings were recovered, citing the ongoing investigation.

Disappeared after fire

The two paintings in question disappeared at the beginning of 2023. Internal searches had been unsuccessful, as the Kunsthaus announced at the time. It was therefore unable to rule out the possibility of theft and called in the police.

The disappearance of the two small-format paintings occurred during work to remedy the consequences of a fire that broke out in a technical room of the Kunsthaus in August 2022.

In June 2023, the Kunsthaus offered a reward. It promised up to 10,000 francs for information that would lead to the discovery or recovery of the item.

Painting from the 17th century

The missing pictures were two small-format paintings. The first is called "Soldiers in Camp" and is by Robert van den Hoecke. It was painted in the middle of the 17th century. The second missing painting is Dirck de Brays' "Daffodils and other flowers in a glass vase on a marble slab" from 1673.

Both pictures are private permanent loans, painted on oak wood, framed and glazed.
