Rescue workers in Ticino rescued a lost hiker after a night in the cold on a mountain in the Verzasca Valley on Monday. After an extensive search, they were able to locate the foreign tourist and fly the hypothermic man down to the valley with minor bruises.
The man was on his way from Brione north of Locarno on Sunday morning for a day hike to the Cima del Masnee at around 2,200 meters above sea level, as reported by Rega Swiss Air-Rescue. On the way back, he came across snow and changed his route. In the end, he was surprised by the darkness and had to spend the night on the mountain.
At daybreak, he tried to descend further into the valley. After getting into rough and steep terrain, he raised the alarm shortly before 07:00 on Monday. However, he was only able to give the rescue services sparse information. The connection to his cell phone was then lost, according to a statement from the rescue services.
The rescuers defined three search zones based on the hiker's descriptions. There are many mountain lakes and huts throughout the region. Thanks to the observations of two witnesses who had seen the man pass by the village of Scimarmota, the Rega crew were able to locate the man after almost two hours of searching.
