Parliament is calling for support for Iranian civil society in the fight for women's and human rights. On Tuesday, the National Council adopted a motion by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council (FAC-N) that had been amended by the Council of States.

During the second discussion of the motion, the large chamber approved the amended text of the motion by 117 votes to 62 with five abstentions. It thus referred the motion to the Federal Council.

In the version that has now been adopted, the motion goes significantly less far than the original APK-N committee motion. This called for Switzerland to fully adopt the EU sanctions against Tehran. However, the Council of States did not agree with this - unlike the National Council originally.

The small chamber also made the reservation that measures to support Iranian civil society should be taken if this is "appropriate and sensible".

An SVP minority in the APK-N unsuccessfully requested that the motion be rejected.
