The Swiss are drawn to faraway places. Despite rising costs and inflation, the vast majority of people are planning one or more vacation trips this year.
Over 90 percent of adults want to travel at least once in 2024, and over half even want to travel at least three times, according to a representative survey conducted by the comparison portal Comparis on Thursday. This includes all private trips with at least one overnight stay away from home, including visits to friends or relatives.
Vacations in Switzerland more likely for lower incomes
Almost two thirds are planning their main holiday trip to another European country. One in five people are even aiming for a non-European destination. Respondents with a high income are more likely to travel to other continents than those with a low income. Conversely, people with a low income are more likely to take a vacation in Switzerland.
Money is also the most important factor when it comes to how often someone travels. Three quarters of respondents with a gross monthly household income of CHF 8,000 travel three or more times in a year. For people with an income of less than CHF 4,000, the figure is only around a third.
Families traveling in summer
Unsurprisingly, summer is the most popular time for Swiss people to travel. However, while almost 70 percent of families prefer summer, a good 40 percent of respondents aged 56 and over travel in the fall.
There are also regional differences. Summer tends to be more popular in Romansh-speaking Switzerland than in German-speaking Switzerland.
