The Swiss Air Force's fighter jet exercise on the A1 highway in the canton of Vaud went off without incident. Four F/A-18 aircraft landed and took off a total of seven times. The highway was reopened to traffic at 4.30 a.m. on Thursday.
In addition to the take-offs and landings, various other scenarios such as refueling the aircraft and a simulated puncture were carried out, the Swiss Air Force announced on Thursday. The exercise was successful overall.
In cooperation with the Federal Roads Office (Astra) and the Air Force 11, which was deployed, the section of highway between Payerne and Avenches was restored to its original condition. The highway was reopened earlier than planned on Thursday morning, it was reported.
On Wednesday, Swiss Air Force fighter planes took off and landed on a stretch of highway again after more than 30 years. The army tested its ability to deploy fighter aircraft from improvised locations.
