Hate symbols such as the swastika will be banned in public spaces in Geneva. According to preliminary results, voters clearly approved a corresponding constitutional amendment on Sunday. A bill to extend voting rights for foreigners failed at the ballot box.
According to initial results, the initiative "Une vie ici, une voix ici" ("One life here, one vote here") was rejected with 61.1% of votes against. If this proposal had been accepted, foreigners in Geneva would have been granted the right to vote and stand for election at cantonal level in future.
The Yes vote for the ban on hate symbols was clear with 84.7% in favor after 95% of the ballots received had been counted. This makes Geneva the first canton in Switzerland to enshrine a ban on the display or wearing of symbols and emblems such as the swastika in public spaces in its constitution.
