The President of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, thanked Switzerland on Wednesday for its help in the war. Speaking to the media in Bern, he justified holding the Ukraine peace conference at Bürgenstock NW without an invitation to Russia.

Ukraine had tried unsuccessfully for decades to negotiate directly with Russia, Stefanchuk said in response to a journalist's question, according to an interpreter's translation. Over the past three years, his country has lost many regions and experienced forced resettlement. "Now we have to conduct the peace negotiations in a new format."

The aim of the peace conference in Switzerland is for all participating states to accept who is the victim and who is the aggressor. "We want everyone to side with Ukraine and say a firm yes to a sustainable and just peace."
