An external report published on Friday reveals a high level of dissatisfaction among employees of the Basel-Stadt cantonal police force. In a survey, they cited a "culture of fear" and a lack of trust in management, among other things. Basel's Director of Security Stephanie Eymann has not ruled out personnel consequences.

"Several people said that the police commander was no longer taken seriously," said the report, which was compiled by administrative law expert Markus Schefer from the University of Basel on behalf of the commander. Some of the 372 respondents also complained about the inability to plan their free time, inadequate salaries and a lack of appreciation. "There is a simmering feeling among employees," Schefer summed up at the presentation of the report to the media.

The measures against sexism and racism are also considered insufficient by some. Schefer suggested that these problems should not simply be seen as moral deficits on the part of individual members of the corps, but should be tackled structurally.

No personnel consequences yet

Basel's security director Stephanie Eymann (LDP) described the results of the survey as worrying. Personnel consequences are "conceivable, but premature at the present time", she told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Many of the problems did not come as a complete surprise to them, but the extent did - for example the lack of trust in the police management and the commander. In contrast to the police management, Eymann (LDP) received good marks from the respondents.
