According to the latest safety barometer published by the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention, the number of serious accidents on Swiss roads rose again last year. Twelve people were seriously injured or killed on Swiss roads every day.

At 4096, the number of people seriously injured reached the highest level in the past ten years, the German Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) announced on Tuesday. At the same time, the number of fatalities stagnated at a high level: 236 people lost their lives in road accidents last year.

There were significantly more serious accidents in French-speaking Switzerland in particular. In the rest of Switzerland, the number remained stable. In relation to the population, the number of accidents in Ticino was still higher than in other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, a comparison across national borders for the past year showed that the mortality rate on Swiss roads is low, as the BFU also reported. In comparison with 21 other European countries and the last five years, Switzerland was in the safest quarter of the countries listed.

However, the BFU was alarmed by the number of pedestrians killed in this country. Compared to 2022, this figure increased from 40 to 46, while the number of serious injuries rose from 497 to 522. Car and motorcycle accidents remained the negative leaders in the statistics for fatal accidents.

The development of e-bikes was also problematic, with a sharp rise in the number of serious accidents. According to the report, e-bikes and pedestrian traffic remain "key challenges for road safety in Switzerland".

However, the most significant increase in serious injuries in 2023 was among motorcyclists. More than a quarter of those seriously injured were on a motorcycle. A fifth of all road traffic fatalities were also motorcyclists.
