According to a survey, the majority of Swiss people believe that the highways and motorways in Switzerland are overloaded. Almost two thirds of them see the Federal Council's plans to widen busy sections of freeway to six lanes as a means of relieving traffic congestion.
However, 82 percent of respondents saw the far greater potential for avoiding congestion in motorized private transport in an increased shift of freight traffic to rail, according to the survey by the Sotomo research institute published in the Tamedia newspapers on Friday, which was made available to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
According to the survey, supporters of all parties considered this measure to be effective. The Swiss electorate will decide on the planned expansion of six Swiss highway sections for 5.3 billion Swiss francs at the ballot box on November 24.
More than half of respondents also identified a very or fairly high potential for expanding the infrastructure for public transport and bicycles. Meanwhile, the expansion of local public transport met with the highest level of approval of all public transport measures. More than half of the survey participants considered local transport in urban areas to be overloaded.
The expansion of long-distance transport and separate public transport lines also received high approval ratings. An increase in ticket prices, on the other hand, was almost universally rejected.
The Sotomo survey was conducted on behalf of the Swiss Association of Road and Traffic Experts (VSS) and was first published in the Tamedia newspapers. According to Sotomo, a total of 2162 people took part in the survey between March 13 and 25 of the current year.
