The A9 highway in central Valais, which was flooded by the Rhone on Sunday night, was reopened to traffic on Monday afternoon. However, the Siders-West junction remained closed due to flooding.

A media spokesperson for the Thun branch of the Federal Roads Office (Astra) responsible for this section of road confirmed the information on the traffic information website "truckinfo.ch" on Monday afternoon. Spokesperson Lukas Studer said that the stretch of road was opened at 3.00 pm.

Some of the water on the roadway had drained away on its own and some had been pumped out. No major damage was reported. The maintenance service had to clear away mud and clean the lanes before reopening. Signalization and crash barriers were also checked.

On Sunday night, the A9 was closed between the Siders-Ost and Sitten-West junctions following the heavy thunderstorms in Valais.
