Natural events bring people back together - even if storms like those that hit Valais, Ticino and Misox in Graubünden last weekend are a disaster. This is the experience of skiing legend Pirmin Zurbriggen, himself a hotelier in Saas-Almagell and Zermatt in Valais.

"I get phone calls from guests from abroad asking: For God's sake, how are you, is it really that bad?" Zurbriggen told the St. Galler Tagblatt newspaper on Wednesday. He tells them: "No, no, you can come to the Saas Valley and Zermatt and be absolutely sure that nothing will happen to you. If the road or a bridge is closed for a day, the world won't end."

For those hotels and guesthouses that have been hit, the summer is over, says the 61-year-old Olympic and World Cup winner from Valais. "They can't welcome their guests, which is bad. Nevertheless, you can't exaggerate: Zermatt is easily accessible and most of the offers work perfectly."

And Zurbriggen assures: "We still have a wonderful landscape and it's far from dangerous everywhere. If this is the case in places, paths will be closed. If you stick to them, there is no danger." But that's just the way it is: "Nature shows us time and again that it is stronger than man."
