The Ticino authorities have identified the body of a man who was found in the bed of the Maggia river near Cevio TI on July 18. He was a 66-year-old Swiss national from the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
This was announced by the Ticino cantonal police on Tuesday. The statement does not say how the man died. However, it is likely that he was one of at least seven people killed in the violent storm in the Maggia Valley at the end of June.
Three bodies had already been recovered in this region over the weekend of the storm. Three female tourists from Germany were victims of a landslide in the hamlet of Fontana in the Bavona Valley, a side valley of the upper Maggia Valley. Emergency services later found two bodies in the Maggia riverbed near Riveo.
The 66-year-old is the sixth fatality, assuming he died in the storm. Another body was also found on Monday afternoon near Cevio in the Maggia. The dead person has not yet been identified. It is likely to be the seventh fatality. One person is still missing.
