Skyguide, the Swiss air navigation service provider, controlled and monitored 628,205 flights in the first half of the year. This represents an increase of almost 13 percent compared to the previous year. However, punctuality declined.
In the first half of 2024, skyguide handled "only" 94.6% of all flights without delays. Punctuality is therefore 2.6% lower than in the first half of 2019, as the company announced on Monday.
Skyguide is making a comparison with this pre-coronavirus period because the number of flight movements in the first half of 2024 has returned to pre-coronavirus levels.
Skyguide notes that almost half of the delays were weather-related. For example, severe thunderstorms in April and June disrupted the flight schedule.
IT breakdowns and a control room full of water
However, almost a third of the air traffic control-related delays were caused by skyguide itself. Skyguide admitted that these were due to the instability of the system.
For example, two IT problems in June meant that flight operations had to be temporarily reduced and even suspended. In Geneva, the basement of the control center was also full of water, meaning that the airspace over Geneva had to be closed as a precaution.
