Following Thursday's homicide in Basel, the case involving the suspect from the University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) is to be investigated externally. Michael Rolaz, CEO of the UPK, made this statement to the media on Monday.
The treatment team of the patient, who is believed to have committed the crime while on an unaccompanied outing, is "deeply affected" after the killing of a 75-year-old woman in the Breite district.
Health Director Lukas Engelberger and Security Director Stephanie Eymann expressed their condolences to the victim's relatives. "If the strong suspicion is confirmed, it is the case that we as a canton were unable to live up to our responsibility - I regret that," said Engelberger.
The suspect, who is currently in detention, was arrested on Friday afternoon following a manhunt. He is a repeat offender: after killing two people in 2014, he has already been convicted and committed to the UPK.
