Following the job cuts at Tamedia announced on Tuesday, the Swiss Media Publishers Association is calling for an expansion of indirect press funding. This is the only way to maintain the journalistic offer of private media in Switzerland. The private media are under severe pressure.
According to the publishers' association, revenues are falling while costs are rising and investment requirements are high. This makes a drastic reduction in journalism necessary, it announced on Tuesday. By 2023, the four major publishers alone (Tamedia, Ringier, NZZ, CH Media) would have already cut 300 jobs, and the figure is now 290 at Tamedia.
This development also affects smaller local and regional newspapers. Publishers warn that without additional funding, newspapers will go out of business. Schweizer Medien is calling on the National Council to increase existing press subsidies by CHF 45 million in the fall session.
The lower postal rates for newspaper delivery have proven their worth since 1849. The expansion will provide targeted support for the 150 daily and weekly newspapers and is urgently needed.
