The President of the extra-parliamentary Federal Media Commission (Emek) has called for the crisis in the media to be counteracted. The discussion about direct financing of the media must be continued, said Anna Jobin on Thursday at Swiss Radio Day in Zurich.

"We don't want media deserts, we don't want news deprived people, we need diversity, and the private media play an indispensable role in this context," said Jobin in a panel discussion in response to a question about the major job cuts announced by the Tamedia media group this week. The group plans to cut almost 300 jobs at its editorial offices and printing plants.

"The media situation will not get any easier, we have to react," said Jobin. She chairs the committee of experts that advises the Federal Council on media matters.

Jobin emphasized that journalism plays an "existential role" for democracy and opinion-forming. The media must be financed in order to produce "good journalism", "experiment" and "go where the audience is", she emphasized.
