The small town of Moutier is expected to become part of the Jura at the beginning of 2026. The voters of the canton of Bern are allowing the municipality to move and on Sunday clearly approved the agreement governing the change of canton.
253,159 voters voted Yes (83.2 percent), 51,104 said No (16.8 percent). The turnout was 42.6 percent, as reported by the Bernese state chancellery on Sunday.
Minor amendments to the Bernese constitution, which became necessary due to the change of canton, were also approved. These were approved by 264,717 voters (86.7 percent) and 40,600 voters (13.3 percent).
The canton of Jura, which also voted on the concordat to change cantons on Sunday, also voted clearly in favor with 72.9%. The change of canton for the municipality of Moutier, which has a population of 7200, still needs the official blessing of the federal parliament. However, following the cantonal votes on Sunday, this is considered a formality.
Moutier is therefore expected to become part of the Jura at the beginning of 2026. The change of canton should resolve the decades-old and controversial Jura issue.
