The art collector Werner Merzbacher died in Zurich on Saturday at the age of 96. This was reported by the Jewish weekly magazine "Tachles" on Sunday evening.

With Merzbacher, the art world has lost one of its most important collectors, the magazine wrote. His decision to exhibit significant parts of his collection at the Zurich Kunsthaus has repositioned the city on the international art calendar.

In the 1960s, Merzbacher and his wife Gabrielle Merzbacher-Mayer began to build up an art collection based on their own preferences. Merzbacher was also an honorary member of the collection committee of the Kunsthaus Zürich and on the board of the Association of Zurich Friends of Art.
