No cantonal fund will be created in Valais to support those affected by the storms in summer 2024. The Grand Council rejected a non-partisan postulate in a special session on the storms on Wednesday.
The aim of creating a cantonal fund was to help private individuals, companies and public bodies. "It is the duty of our canton to support the victims of this natural disaster," argued the authors of the text from the ranks of the SP, FDP, Center and SVP.
In the opinion of the State Council, however, there are already enough mechanisms in place to compensate private individuals for the consequences of bad weather. "You have to use all the support instruments first before creating new ones," countered State Councillor Roberto Schmidt (center). The plenum agreed with him by 69 votes to 59.
On the other hand, the cantonal parliament voted 109 to 13 in favor of a postulate aimed at speeding up the clearing of mud after the floods in Sierre. It calls on the State Council to provide immediate emergency aid of at least CHF 4 million. Both texts came from members of parliament from the district of Sierre.
