State and non-state actors in conflicts must protect civilians from the dangers of new technologies. For the first time, the Red Cross Movement and 196 states declared a resolution on this topic legally valid in Geneva on Thursday.

The four-day international conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent came to an end on Thursday. An adopted text recognizes the need to further evaluate at what point and in what form humanitarian principles should be applied to new technologies. The parties to the conflict must ensure the integrity of the infrastructures that enable the use of the internet, it said.

The conference appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and its 191 members. They are called upon to improve their preparedness in order to avoid problems for civilians. The ICRC has been the victim of cyberattacks in recent years - including an attack that affected the data of 515,000 people. As a result, the ICRC launched several initiatives, such as an office for data protection and a cyber delegation.
