National Council President Eric Nussbaumer spoke with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, about the ongoing negotiations between Switzerland and the EU. The highest Swiss official traveled to Brussels on Monday.

Nussbaumer explained the three domestic policy discussion points to Maltese, as he told the Keystone-SDA news agency and other Swiss journalists. These were the specification of a safeguard clause on immigration, the dispute settlement mechanism and the dynamic adoption of legislation.

The President of the National Council also outlined the timetable for concluding the agreement. A referendum in the fall of 2026 is the earliest date, he told Metsola. This could be the case if the negotiating parties reach an agreement soon.

The President of the Parliament spoke of a "good conversation", as she wrote on the online portal X. The European Parliament is ready for closer cooperation in the areas of trade, people-to-people contacts and support for Ukraine.

Nussbaumer spoke of an "open atmosphere" and Metsola was interested. He would also like to intensify the exchange between the parliaments.

Based on the planned high-level dialogue, which is to be institutionalized between the European Commission and the Federal Council if the agreement is successfully concluded, a joint parliamentary committee could be established, the Basler explained.

There is currently a dialog between two parliamentary delegations. The committee envisaged by Nussbaumer should be able to adopt resolutions, among other things. As a first step, the President of the National Council invited Metsola to Switzerland.
