Confederation takes positive stock of emergency exercise with Gösgen nuclear power plant

Following the three-day overall emergency exercise following an accident at the Gösgen nuclear power plant in the canton of Solothurn, the federal government has drawn a positive initial balance. The federal government announced on Friday that the exercise objectives had been achieved. The functioning of the basic emergency protection processes has been demonstrated.
The overall emergency exercise (GNU 24) from Tuesday to Thursday focused on dealing with an accident at the Gösgen nuclear power plant. According to the scenario, there was a release of radioactivity from the nuclear power plant.
According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection (Babs), this required targeted communication about the protective measures taken that was coordinated with all partners. There had been planning work for a simulated large-scale evacuation with buses and the SBB from the area around the Gösgen nuclear power plant to other cantons.
According to Babs, the practising authorities had to define the affected areas, trigger the necessary protective measures and explain these to the population. Alertswiss reports, media releases and media conferences were used for this purpose.
The overall emergency exercise, which takes place every two years, also involved the grid company Swissgrid, headquartered in Aarau, for the first time. The company tested its crisis organization in real time.
The scenario assumed that the signal box in Aarau for the region's power distribution had suddenly failed. The operating personnel were transferred to the second control center in Prilly VD.
