Switzerland has taken second place in the annual World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR) published by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne. This is the country's best position since the ranking was introduced in 2017.

Compared to the previous year's edition, Switzerland has improved by three places. Singapore takes the top position, while Denmark is in third place, as the IMD announced on Thursday.

Various advances

Switzerland made particularly significant progress in the areas of high-tech exports (9th place), e-participation (up 11 positions to 27th place) and cyber security (11th place).

Nevertheless, according to the report, there is still a need for action, particularly with regard to digital identity and the electronic patient record. "Such projects require not only investment, but also trust in technologies, data security and institutions. The focus must be on building trust in order to secure Switzerland's competitiveness," Franziska Barmettler, CEO of Digitalswitzerland, was quoted as saying.

The annual ranking compiled by the IMD's WCC is based on comprehensive data and surveys to assess the digital competitiveness of 67 countries. The assessment is based on three main factors - knowledge, technology and future viability - which are divided into nine sub-factors with a total of 59 criteria.
