Switzerland is paying 15 million into the Paris Climate Agreement Adaptation Fund to help developing countries adapt to climate change. This was decided by Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. Weather extremes hit the poorest people particularly hard. The fund is intended to strengthen resilience.

Switzerland has been paying into the Adaptation Fund since 2010, as Cassis' Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday. With the 15 million for the years 2025 to 2028, the contribution amounts to a total of CHF 53 million. The money comes from existing budgets. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is responsible.

The fund supports disadvantaged population groups in developing countries that have to cope with the consequences of climate change such as melting glaciers, rising sea levels, floods and droughts. According to the FDFA, around four million people have benefited from the contributions to date.

As an example, the FDFA cited 258 early warning systems against extreme events. They enabled the restoration and protection of 15,600 square kilometers of natural habitat, just over a quarter of Switzerland's surface area.

Global support for poorer populations to adapt to climate change is severely underfunded, as the FDFA also reported. The United Nations Environment Program estimates that additional funding of up to 366 billion US dollars is required.
