Healthcare costs likely to rise to over 100 billion francs

According to the Economic Research Center at ETH Zurich, Swiss healthcare expenditure is likely to rise to over CHF 100 billion in 2025. This year, expenditure is likely to increase by over 4 percent.
In relation to gross domestic product, healthcare expenditure is expected to amount to over 12% in 2024, according to the Swiss Economic Institute (KOF) on Tuesday. In 2000, this figure was still 9.1 percent.
According to the forecast, per capita healthcare expenditure will amount to around CHF 11,000 in 2024. By 2026, this figure is expected to rise to CHF 11,600.
According to the KOF, various factors are contributing to rising expenditure. Due to the ageing society, more money is being spent on long-term care. Hospitals and doctors' surgeries are also driving growth in the healthcare system. All of this is reflected in rising health insurance premiums, according to the press release.
Not necessarily problematic
In view of the demographic development of old age, the KOF does not necessarily consider the rising share of healthcare expenditure in the economy to be problematic. However, the system faces major challenges such as efficiency issues, the use of artificial intelligence and the safety of drug supply.
