Changing the insurance model during the year becomes possible

Anyone wishing to change their health insurance model will be able to do so in certain cases during the year from January 1, 2025. On Wednesday, the Federal Council enacted a corresponding amendment to the Ordinance on Health Insurance with effect from this date.
According to current legislation, insured persons who have opted for an optional deductible of over CHF 300 and a free choice of service providers cannot change their insurance model during the year. According to the Federal Council, this can lead to financial problems, for example if you move to a canton with higher premiums, become unemployed or start further training.
The system will become more flexible from next year. Insured persons who have taken out insurance with an optional deductible and a free choice of service providers will be able to switch to a model with a restricted choice of service providers - such as a GP, HMO or telemedicine model - with their own insurer during the year in order to pay lower premiums.
It is still not possible to switch to another insurer during the year. It is also still not possible to switch from one alternative insurance model to another alternative insurance model from the same insurer during the year.
