Due to the snowfall on Thursday afternoon, the Bernmobil transport company had to suspend bus services. Streetcar line 3 was also taken out of service. The other streetcar lines were running as well as possible, Bernmobil media spokesman Rolf Meyer told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
At rush hour, many commuters were forced to walk, as one eyewitness reported. In the late afternoon, Meyer was unable to say anything about accidents and body damage, as the situation was still too unclear. The transport company is now hoping that the city's winter road clearance service will be able to clear the roads as quickly as possible.
It occasionally happens in winter that Bern's buses have trouble on steeper sections during heavy snowfall and spin their wheels. On Thursday, bus services were temporarily suspended across the entire network. This was also for safety reasons.
The first real snowfall of the season began in Bern on Thursday afternoon.
