The heavy snowfall led to many accidents in Aargau on Thursday evening. According to the Aargau cantonal police on Friday, most of the accidents were minor. The Staffelegg and other mountain roads were closed overnight.

The first of a total of 60 accidents was reported to the emergency call center at around 4 pm. Due to the persistent snowfall, evening traffic on many main roads and the highway came to a standstill. At times, accident reports were coming in every minute until 9 p.m., after which the situation eased.

With summer tires and drunk against street lamp

In most cases, there was only material damage, with a few people sustaining minor injuries, according to the police. Some of the vehicles involved in the accidents were still fitted with summer tires. A 27-year-old driver with summer tires who crashed into a street lamp in Rothrist at 3.45 a.m. was also reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The police confiscated his driver's license.

Closed mountain routes

Despite the constant efforts of the road maintenance team, the heavy snowfall on the mountain roads caused problems. The Staffelegg between Densbüren and Küttigen was no longer passable for heavy traffic and was temporarily closed. Further closures and detour were necessary on Benken, Kaistenberg, Ampfernhöhe and Böhler.

According to the police, the main roads were passable again on Friday morning, but caution is still advised on secondary roads.
