The city of Biel has elected a woman as mayor for the first time. Social Democrat Glenda Gonzalez Bassi won the election on Sunday by a narrow margin of just over 200 votes over Natasha Pittet from the Free Democrats.

Gonzalez Bassi received 5848 votes in a run-off election, Pittet 5640, with a voter turnout of 38.83 percent, the city authorities announced on Sunday.

This means that the mayor's office will remain in social democratic hands, as it has been for the past five decades. Gonzalez Bassi succeeds Erich Fehr, who has been mayor for many years.

The people of Biel/Bienne had already appointed their new authorities on September 22. The city government remained in red-green hands. The municipal council is now made up of: Lena Frank (Greens), Glenda Gonzalez Bassi (SP), Anna Tanner (SP), Natasha Pittet (PLR) and Beat Feurer (SVP). A run-off was required for the election of the mayor.
