Based on the biography of its resident artist, the Museum Tinguely is dedicating its special exhibition "Fresh Window" to the theme of art and shop windows. Among the window decorators on show are a number of prominent names from the modern era.
Tinguely's career began in Basel with an apprenticeship and later work as a window dresser. Jasper Johns also earned money as a decorator under a pseudonym. The packaging artist Christo covered shop windows and Andy Warhol designed a childlike decoration campaign for a perfume brand in the Bonwit Teller department store in New York.
The museum has collected works and documents from this "interweaving of art and shop window design". The overview exhibition also features current works by artists who play with the phenomenon of displaying goods or even recreate entire shop windows.
The exhibition "Fresh Window - Art & Shop Window" at Museum Tinguely Basel lasts until May 11, 2025.
