Eckart Seith's defense lawyer has applied to the Zurich High Court for the proceedings to be discontinued. The German lawyer, who became known as the "Cum-Ex investigator", is on trial for economic espionage.

Seith's defense attorney filed the motion to dismiss the case right at the beginning of the trial on Monday morning. One of the reasons he gave for the motion was the alleged bias of a public prosecutor involved in the proceedings.

Seith is charged with economic espionage and offenses against the Banking Act because he obtained internal documents from Bank J. Safra Sarasin and passed them on to German investigators. Two bank employees are also charged.

The documents were instrumental in clearing up the cum-ex scandal. The German state suffered billions in losses as a result of cum-ex transactions.
