Being a Marvel villain is not easy. For his title role in "Kraven The Hunter", movie star Aaron Taylor-Johnson had to put in a lot of effort. Things get tough in the movie.
British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson had to undergo tough physical preparation for his role as the muscular Marvel antihero Kraven The Hunter in the film of the same name. "Training for the movie was really tough, really exhausting," Taylor-Johnson told the German Press Agency in London. "I had to try to look like the comic character. That was the goal." The 34-year-old is in correspondingly good form in the action spectacle.
Merciless villain
"Kraven The Hunter", which opens in Swiss-German cinemas on December 12, is a spin-off film from the "Spider-Man" universe. As the gangster's son Sergei Kravinoff, Taylor-Johnson doesn't seem malicious at first. "He just wants to be completely different from his father - and ends up being even worse." He becomes the feared and merciless villain Kraven, who is superhumanly strong. "And then there's a lot of action in the movie," said Taylor-Johnson, "so I really had to have discipline and stamina. It was a tough one, honestly."
Because the film - according to director J.C. Chandor - intentionally shows very clear depictions of violence, it is only released in Switzerland from the age of 16 (R-rated in the USA). "I think to do justice to a character like that, it was important to make an R-rated movie and really show that typical comic book violence," said Taylor-Johnson. "It's a raw gangster story. There's a lot of emotion and heart in it, but clearly the action has to be there to balance it out."
With two Oscar winners
Oscar winner Russell Crowe ('Gladiator') plays Sergei's father. Oscar winner Ariana DeBose ('West Side Story'), Alessandro Nivola and Fred Hechinger also star in the tough action thriller.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is not worried that some Marvel films, including "Madame Web" from the "Spider-Man" universe, have recently flopped at the box office. "No. You always approach a project like this with the question: Is this exciting? Is this a character I can get into and bring to life? And this one was just so interesting. It stood out for me from all the other comic book adaptations."
