The trial for the murder of a 60-year-old man began on Wednesday morning in Muttenz BL. The accused is said to have killed his daughter-in-law four and a half years ago. He asked for forgiveness in court.

He himself did not know why and how the whole thing had happened, the accused said at the start of the trial. He was not a person who would destroy his own family.

"I regret it very much and ask for forgiveness," he said. The 60-year-old Kosovar also expressed his condolences to the relatives of his deceased daughter-in-law.

According to the indictment from the public prosecutor's office in Basel, the accused allegedly killed his 24-year-old daughter-in-law with numerous stab wounds in his apartment in Pratteln BL in June 2020.

According to the indictment, the homicide was preceded by differences with the daughter-in-law, who had married the defendant's son in Kosovo in July 2015 in a double wedding with his brother.

The verdict is to be announced on Monday afternoon.
