The parliamentary bill for state aid for the ailing Swiss steel industry has cleared another hurdle: The Council of States has approved the corresponding law.

On Monday afternoon, the Council voted 24 to 17 with one abstention to approve amendments to the Electricity Supply Act. The detailed discussion then began. The National Council approved the bill last week.

The preliminary consultation committee of the Council of States had previously tightened up this National Council bill in the past few days. This means that the companies that are to receive aid should meet stricter conditions for this aid. The cantons should also make their contribution.

Four companies are to benefit from the aid, as was announced in the Council of States on Monday: Steeltec in Emmenbrücke LU, Stahl Gerlafingen SO and the aluminum foundries Constellium and Novelis in Sierre VS. They will have to pay lower grid usage fees for electricity for four years.
