Only a few questions remain unanswered in the negotiations with Switzerland, as EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic wrote on X on Tuesday. He had previously informed the European ministers at the General Affairs Council in Brussels about the status of the negotiations.
"Our goal is to get the talks over the finish line," wrote Sefcovic, who is negotiating with Switzerland on behalf of the European Commission. He appreciates the support of the member states.
The EU Commission had informed the Council in detail and comprehensively about the talks, said the Hungarian minister, Janos Boka, who chaired the meeting, at a media event after the Council meeting on Tuesday evening in Brussels. The Council had expressed its "full support" for the EU Commission to conclude the negotiations this year. Hungary still holds the presidency of the EU Council until the end of this year.
End in sight
Boka appeared before the media accompanied by EU Commissioner Marta Kos. She said that the negotiations would continue at both a technical and political level. However, they would be over in a few days, said Kos. The ball is now in the Swiss Federal Council's court, said an EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Switzerland has been negotiating with the EU for nine months in order to redefine the common relationship for the future. The aim is to update existing agreements and conclude new ones.
